I am an aspiring one. I am eager to talk with any amount of people who know thier stuff. I know a little bit, but I want to hit the ground running kind of before I get my own. I suppose some good info to put down about my interest in it would be that I am looking at Squier (Fender) Bass Pack, I have been around enough to assume it is worth in quality. Reviews certainly reflect that it is. I want to start with 4 string, but I don't really know what benefits or downsides there are to that or 5-6 + string Basses. I am all for advice, tips. I am left handed (so I have to order whatever I want where I live).

Weird! - Im left handed and wanted to learn the bass.
mail this guy - woz@regentguitars.co.uk - he was top! and gave me some really good advice.
I got a 4 string fretted & a 5 string fretless thru him around 8 months ago.
Let me know how you get on.

Also I'd go for 4 string: learn the basics before starting on five or six stringed... Keep us updated on how you get on
